This post is written by someone who understands the realities of small and medium businesses (SMBs - or SMEs for many countries outside the USA) trying to get the best value from social media. Each of the 9 points is valuable. I liked in particular the first two (Be yourself, and Actually care about your customers or clients) in that these are where "small" can be leveraged in a way "big" cannot, or not easily. I also liked - and recommend you check out - the item on curating content (hint, get bigger impact in less time).

"As a small company, you simply don’t have the content creation resources that larger firms have. That’s okay. Get really good at content curation, and your audience may never notice."

James Kliemt heads up social media for the Queensland (State) Police Service, renowned for the informative and often tongue-in-cheek amusing posts on its Facebook page - 620,000 followers.

In this article, James dives into Facebook analytics - and thankfully without the jargon that closes off a lot of analytics discussion for me and probably for a lot of others. He got my attention with his opening sentence: "I don't think there is a single metric that causes more angst in the social media industry than Facebook reach."

Then, provocatively, "I find it really peculiar that in an industry so obsessed with formulas, metrics and micromanagement most social media professionals push their content out into the world with little practical understanding of the rules that will decide if it will be seen by a huge audience or a tiny one."

I hope those snippets intrigue you enough to read the whole post, because if you are wondering about the reach you or a client might be getting, or not, with a Facebook page, and looking for improvement in that department, you will find this a useful read.

Brad Stone & Sarah Freier

71% of Snapchat users are 25 or under, so if that's not you or not your market, this item might not be immediately of obvious interest.

However, even for those of use who have no intention of using Snapchat, the article makes interesting reading about leadership and the thinking of a very young founder of a company valued in the multi billions.

"CEO says he knows what millennials and teens want, and it's not on television or Facebook."

"Spiegel is the co-founder, chief executive officer, and profane enfant terrible behind one of the largest and fastest-growing social networks on the Internet. At 24, he runs a startup with 330 employees and a valuation north of $15 billion, which claims more than 100 million mostly young users."
