The 6 tactics to say goodbye to:
  • Sending automated responses
  • Blindly abusing hashtags
  • Skipping out on multimedia content
  • "Like"-gating
  • Overlooking curated content
  • Relying on QR code

These are all good points, explained in the linked post.

Just to focus now on a couple of the points that I see as very important, viz. sending automated responses and skipping out on multimedia content.

Sending automated responses

For example, an automated acknowledgement of a "follow" on Twitter, or a "boilerplate" invitation to connect on LinkedIn.

They are by definition impersonal and thus not truly social. They are ironically inefficient, precisely because the automated nature of them is obvious to any reasonably experienced user of social media.

As the author of the blog post observes:

While it may seem like sending a quick message is a thoughtful way to reach out to new followers or fans, the act appears disingenuous when it becomes obvious that you’ve simply fired off an automated response.

Skipping out on multimedia content

For those of us (like me) who are more likely to try and communicate with words than with still images and/or videos, there is a temptation not to incorporate multimedia in our communications. A mistake.

It can be a creativity challenge or a technology one. Or both!

For creativity, that's why I keep an eye out for, and include in issues of this newsletter, posts that open up resources for creating more multimedia-rich content. As for example the next item in this issue of SBB.

On the technology front, as an example technically I can incorporate multimedia in these newsletters, but I find the AWeber newsletter setup less than helpful with this.Clearly, I have to try harder!

The author of the post cuts no slack for me and others who are skipping the multimedia challenge, thusly:

It’s not difficult to incorporate images and even videos into your content marketing mix, which is why failure to do so is such a marketing faux pas.

Every major social network, from Facebook to Pinterest, has recently developed their own native video services and/or promoted video ads. So we know for a fact that 2015 will be the year that video marketing finally takes over social media!

So if you have decided that 2015 will be marked by your embracing video for your online marketing, this post will give you a very helpful rundown on how videos work with different platforms, specifically Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest, Vine and Instagram.

It also includes a very helpful, concise explanation of different types of video for marketing, namely:
  • Explainer videos (2 minutes duration0
  • Webinars
  • Microvideos
  • Screencast videos

If you don't have time to read it now, bookmark it for future reference.

This is a significant story not just because of the insight it gives into how social media, taken seriously, can be incorporated into "big picture" business and marketing strategy at the enterprise level. It also gives some important clues to the role of social media for business South East Asia.

The short story:

Specialist business consultancy KINSHIP digital has won a tender to build a Social Media Command Centre for the Bank of Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV), modeled on similar facilities it operates throughout the region.
