Why the SWOT Analysis Still Matters in Marketing  Scott Monty

When you’re developing a strategy–whether it’s a business strategy, marketing strategy, or communications strategy–the tried and true SWOT analysis is still a valuable tool. Developments with Uber this week got us to thinking about the importance of two of the areas that can leave a company the most vulnerable: Weaknesses and Threats.

I use the good old SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) as a key element of any social media strategy I help clients develop, and of my own social media strategy. With some telling examples from what looks to some like the unstoppable global rollout of the Uber ride-sharing phenomenon, Scott Monty shows why that is probably not a good reflection of likely reality and why we should all do the hard work of timely SWOT analysis.

There’s been a lot written regarding the top social media trends for 2015. Fortunately, you won’t have to scour through report after report to make smarter marketing decisions - a new infographic titled “The State of the Internet 2015: Social Media Trends” from MDG Advertising details everything you need to know.

The 5 Trends
  1. Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn are essential
  2. Pinterest is deeper than you think
  3. Facebook has become a huge video platform
  4. E-Commerce integration is getting even better
  5. Messaging apps are massively popular

Research indicates that people are using Facebook and Twitter for more than connecting with friends and brands. They’re now looking to these platforms for updates on current events.

Key findings
  1. More People Get Their News From Facebook and Twitter
  2. Twitter Is the Go-to Platform for Breaking News
  3. Facebook Is the #1 News Source for Millennials
  4. Reporters Rely on Facebook and Twitter for Visibility
  5. Facebook and Twitter Are Working on News-related Projects

Update on the Podcast Show

This week I published my interview with Kris Gale, Chairman of a company which specializes in helping companies access Australian Federal Government support for industry innovation, and a keen student and practitioner of leadership in sport.. We had a great conversation about how Governments can promote innovation in private industry (and it's not just about money) and about the kind of leadership needed, in government and in business, for this age of digital disruption
