BITES

Fascinating short video (5.05 min) of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg's recent interview with India PM Narendra Modi.  Some sage advice to politicians everywhere on the value of social media.

Note, the audio of the interpreter is quite faint - I had to turn my computer speakers up to full volume to hear properly - it was worth it!

The line I loved best: Modi says "to leaders all over the world" "You're not going to gain by running away from social media".

Modi, who has 15.2 million Twitter followers and 30 million likes on his Facebook page, said social media is a key tool for diplomacy. He's an avid poster and frequently shares pictures and personal dispatches from meetings and events. Zuckerberg said Modi is "setting an example" for how world leaders should connect with their citizens.

Facebook has expanded dramatically the scope of its search function. Some will be pleased about the range of information that will now be available.

Others will be concerned about privacy implications. The response will no doubt be that all we have to do, if we are worried about privacy, is to tighten up our privacy settings. I wonder how many who may have cause to be concerned about what may be thrown up by the new, more deep-diving search, will do that?

...Facebook’s upgraded search functionality will now seek to better anticipate and locate more content relevant to each query. When you type in your search term/s, Facebook will provide matches based on trending discussions and issues, enabling better discovery across Facebook and helping users find relevant content and conversations. The new search will show you not only the best matches from your friends’ posts, but the results will also be categorized to help you find the most relevant and popular posts, as well as public comments."

Twitter's New "Tweet Grid"  Andrew Hutchinson

Twitter held it's annual "Flight" conference last week and announced some new features.

One of the early announcements from the event is a new way to showcase tweet content on websites through an improved embedding system which enables users to display tweet collections like this:.. Twitter’s promoting this as a 'new way to tell stories' via tweet, with customizable collections which can be shown in this grid format.

I'm not actually excited about this but I suspect it could have some use. I followed the article's step by step explanation of how to create and display a grid and have just published that on my web site, at this link: Experimenting with Twitter's New Tweet Grid.
