If you only read one item in this issue, this would be the one. The author has packed some great advice into about 1,000 words. It's like an instant seminar on common social media myths that can bring any company's marketing efforts undone or at least have such efforts produce little more than a yawn.

What are the seven myths
  1. Social media is a sales tool.
  2. Likes and followers are what truly matter.
  3. Social media is a necessity, not a route for new customers.
  4. Social media is an independent strategy.
  5. Scheduled posts will do the work for me.
  6. Social media is free, so I might as well do something with it
  7. You have to "get" social media to be successful.

...today (March 10), via the official LinkedIn blog, the professional social network has unveiled their new look Privacy and Settings dashboard, with a whole new layout, structure and improved options to help users better navigate and understand the options available to them.

One of the many challenges for LinkedIn users is navigating the Privacy and Settings section. Actually, finding it in the first place is probably even harder than navigating it when you get there. In case you haven't visited it lately, you find it in the dropdown Account & Settings menu when you mouseover your picture in the top right navigation bar.

But even though getting there remains a challenge for new users, it's good news that the layout of the section has now been made much more user-friendly. Mine hasn't changed yet, but it's common for rollouts of new LinkedIn features or updates to take a while to reach everyone.

This article gives a good overview of the new layout and how to navigate it. With screenshots too, which is good.

If you have a challenge keeping track of all the good stuff you come across on the web, you are not alone. I do, and I like to be able to find things quickly. Browser bookmarks ("favorites") are ok but the searching process can be very time consuming.

One of the best applications around is Delicious.

Here's the blurb:

Delicious is a free service designed with care to be the best place to save what you love on the web. We keep your stuff safe so it's there when you need it - always. Delicious remembers so you don't have to. It's easy to build up a collection of links, essentially creating your own personal search engine. It's quick to organize your links so that when you're looking for something, you can find it within seconds.

I use it every week to keep track of items, including those I see as good content for this newsletter. It's very easy to use. And it's free. Although for a while it looked like being totally neglected or worse by its owners, fortunately it was revived and even acquired recently a fresh, very user-friendly interface.

You can choose whether to make particular "submissions" (their word) public (default) or mark them private - more about that at this link.

All of mine or most are public. Here is the link to my delicious collection.

In coming weeks I'll share a few more applications I use to help me bring you this weekly roundup without my having to stress too much. Some of these, if any of you are not familiar with them, may be of some help to you in your own content collecting/curating.

LATEST PODCAST EPISODE

Observant readers will note that this title seems familiar and that would be because it is very similar to the title in last's weeks entry in this section. It's an update, although not in the audio content - more a machinery thing, because there was a glitch in the uploading of the audio file. Hopefully now fixed.
