Social Business Bites #167 - Curated by Des Walsh

Hi

I've been thinking this week past about how tough it can be for people who are working hard in jobs or contract assignments, but wanting at the same time to keep building their professional profile and personal brand. So I read with great interest the excellent advice in the article linked below on job seekers and social media. The article alerts job seekers - and by implication those freelancers of the gig economy - to the fact that many of them may well be unaware of, namely that potential employers or their agents will be scanning the job seeker's social presence - so it had better be shipshape and Bristol fashion, as my Bristol, UK dwelling friend Greg Cooper might say.

Instagram for B2B? Really? Anyway, isn't Instagram just for millennials and younger? Answers in sequence: Yes, and No. The excellent article linked this week provides well-illustrated examples of B2B companies such as IBM using Instagram effectively. And as for the millennials, it appears that while some of might have not been looking closely they have been giving every appearance of taking over the commanding heights of the economy, if not now, soon.

And the third juicy item this week is about keeping up with social media trends. A good article. But then you've got Social Business Bites for that, haven't you? :)

In today’s digital era social media is now an integral part to job searching. LinkedIn is great for expanding your network and build your personal brand, or less obvious choices such as Instagram and Twitter which can be used to keep up with the company activities and gain insight to their culture.

However, some job seekers fail to realise that potential employers are also aware of the impact of social media, and will often search out their candidates during the interview process.

Social media marketing is the need of the hour today and will continue to influence the lives of those involved with it. With every passing day, changes are made on social media channels by adding new features, changing algorithms, and setting new trends. For example, Facebook recently enabled a story feature or the 360 live feature.

A tech savvy individual can give you updates on the changing trends in the world of social media, but how do you keep in touch with these trends otherwise?
